RDO is my shorthand for squirrel. From the Spanish, "ardilla." Cisco's fourth hunt was productive and fun. I have been bringing his weight down. This morning at 0630 he hit the scale at 961. Perfect, though still on the heavy side.
It was cool and sunny. Cisco got after the squirrels immediately and nabbed this small buck cat squirrel on about his fifth or sixth flight. The last picture I took while waiting for him to come down with the RDO. Unfortunately he glided across the creek with it. I ran to the SUV, and drove to the bridge. Then it took a good 10 to 15 minutes to track Cisco on the other side of the creek with the receiver. I didn't really need it because I knew about where he was. The brush was really heavy and I was not looking forward to going back with a hawk on my fist.
When I got there he had not broken in, but had plucked the tail. I threw him a day old chick, and he left the squirrel. I picked up the squirrel, and clawed our way to the bridge through the cover. I let him feed on some of squirrel on the trek back.
Cisco is funny after RDO hawking. He wants to hang out on my fist for a while after we're done, even with a crop of food. If not he jumps around in the box. If I really have to leave I hood him; he is always hooded on the way out to a hunt.
