I went back to the "other" squirrel place today. Cisco has been steady at the woods near Cullen Park, but there is a fair amount of foot traffic there, plus a troublesome creek. This other place has cat squirrels but lots of cover, at least on the west side, and a lower concentration of squirrels. Today I hit the east side with Cisco. On the way to the woods, there is a field with nearly uncatchable swamp rabbits plus small birds. The area is overgrown with McCartney Rose bushes. Today Cisco spent 30 or 40 minutes chasing birds. It was fun, plenty of hovering and crashing the brush, but no contact. When we got to the woods, Cisco spotted a squirrel immediately. A couple of chases and then a 30° launch from a branch to the ground. I heard a squeal, and knew Cisco had scored, the first "ground squirrel" of the season. The spiny vines made approaching very slow. By the time I got to Cisco the squirrel was dead and he was hiding from the local red-shouldered hawks. Cisco was flat on the ground. I even wondered if he were injured. See the pictures. Anyway a good day with a good hawk.
Falconry in Houston: The main page is www.chucksfalconry.com - There are links to the past seasons, most involving my red-tailed hawk Cisco. For the 2015/2016 season I am experimenting with "Blogger" for season updates. In the past I posted the season activities directly on my website. Please sign up if you want to post.
