Rabbit chases! I was fooling around getting ready, the dog was running around and Farrah was chilling pre-hunt. Farrah flew out and made a nice bunny chase. I got ready and put her on the t pole. We had maybe a half dozen rabbit chases in the cover. Cover is not her thing. We crossed the creek and she took a stand in a tree, but I couldn't get a rabbit moving. At some point she snagged a cotton rat.
This got me into my training mode. She has a strong tendency to carry, which once nearly cost her life. I pushed her weight back a little last season and used Mavrogordato's idea of making in quickly. This season I have added tidbitting to that. Today she left the cotton rat and hopped to my fist for the balance of the chick. Eureka and all that, or maybe hallelujah.....
sounds like a fun morning! forgive my ignorance...but why would carrying be dangerous to the bird? how did it almost cost her life?
ReplyDeleteArnie is quite a hunting companion, glad to hear she didn't carry!
ReplyDeleteYes, at his best he doesn't get in the way.
