I decided since it was late fall that an afternoon hunt would be good. Shouldn't be too warm. I even verified with Weatherbug. That was mistake #1.
Driving out to the field just west of my house, it seemed warmer than I expected. Getting out of the SUV confirmed that. Oh well, we're here and Cisco is at a good weight.
I headed straight to the woods, barely touching the swamp rabbit field. Cisco was following well. The mosquitoes were unbelievable. I was inhaling some of them and they seemed to enjoy the insect repellent that I had showered in. As usual we did not see much game, but I knew there were squirrels waiting. Once in the woods the mosquitoes got worse, something I was not sure was possible. Cisco followed me and soon found a swamp rabbit that he chased under the canopy. I noticed that there was plenty of poison ivy.
I was attempting to battle the mosquitoes and thrashed the poison ivy with my beating stick. A good coat of urishiol really helps the performance of a beating stick. Though Cisco was working a squirrel, I had enough. This was a first. I figured if he caught a squirrel I'd run in and help. But I was done. Cisco left the squirrel and followed. It was a long 1/2 mile to the SUV; I fed him on the way back. When we arrived, he was ready to dive into the hawk box.
I reached for the phone on my belt clip, then looked for it all over the truck. Somewhere out in the field was my Samsung Galaxy. Fortunately it was getting near dusk, so I wouldn't have to spend too much time looking for the smartphone. I retraced my path across a short mowed field looking right and left. Nothing. I began to think about using a phone locator app if there is such a thing. On the return trip I spotted it. Phew! It must have popped loose when I knelt down to get some tidbits ready for Cisco. A major PITA avoided.
